Family papers of Workman and his wife, Rhea Thomas Workman, including biographical data; correspondence, 1915-1971, with parents, sister Virginia, wife Rhea and her parents Ruth and Herber Thomas; papers re Workman's military career, 1931-1965; civic activities; and his financial affairs, 1956-1981, including correspondence, tax returns and ledgers of earnings and expenditures. Series includes letters, 1918, from Heber Thomas to fiance and later wife, Ruth Dorrill Thomas, re training and preparation for World War I; and letters, ca. 1930s, of Rhea Thomas to her parents re her activities at Winthrop College and correspondence with William Workman before and after their marriage. Also including correspondence, 1942-1945, re Workman's World War II service as an intelligence officer in England, North Africa, Hawaii, and various U.S. locations including Fort Bragg, N.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Camp Davis, N.C.; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and Fort Bliss, Tex.; files include sixty-one World War II aircraft recognition cards from London's Valentine & Sons and a bound volume of America's Alertman, 1942, a weekly newspaper for the Aircraft Artillery Command, Eastern Theater of Operations; later papers document Workman's thirty years of service as a reservist. Papers, ca. 1950s-1972, documenting Workman's involvement with the Methodist Church include letter, 1972,explaining his resignation from the delegation to the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference of the Methodist Church; also including texts of speeches delivered throughout the state on a variety of topics, and charts recording the date, place, group, attendence, topic, amount of honorarium and the name of person who invited him to speak.
